Gilead officially began in 1887 when the Rock Island Railroad built a station where the elevator now stands. The Irwin's built the first house south of the elevator and north of Pioneers Inn - which is still standing today. It was a boarding house for passengers and railroad workers. The next building was a limestone building, Pioneers Inn used to house and feed the railroad workers.   * More FUN FACTS below

 The current post office is located in the old bank building with the bathroom in the "safe" place.

One of the first schools near Gilead is the Rock School which was built in 1874.  It is still standing and located 2 miles north of Gilead and 1/2 mile east. It was built with rock from surrounding hills and closed in 1952.  Jesse James' sister lived in the house on the way to the school house - the 2nd mile from Gilead NE Corner -  The house is gone, but rumor has it they had a barn type area in the basement which they used to hide Jesse and the stolen horses.  

There was a keystone bridge near that corner that has been replaced.  Keystone bridges were built from limestone.  There is a remainder of one on the tower road.  Check in with Karen at Pioneers Inn for more information.
